Can a few carefully chosen words really control advanced AI? The answer is a resounding “yes.” Moreover, recent studies show that nearly 85% of AI-generated results can be improved with just subtle changes to the written prompt. This ability to manipulate AI results impacts not only businesses but also the entire environment around us – from education and art to propaganda.

What is Prompt Manipulation?

Prompt manipulation refers to a specific method of crafting prompts that deliberately guide AI systems to achieve the best possible result. The essence of this method lies in the strategic selection of words, phrases, and the overall structure of the prompt provided to the AI model.

To understand how manipulation works, imagine an AI language model trained using large volumes of textual data.

When it receives a prompt, the AI model generates responses based on learned patterns and the information stored in its database. Thus, by envisioning the database’s structure and carefully formulating prompts, we can influence the AI to generate responses utilizing precisely the knowledge we need.

Those who work with AI have already noticed that influencing the model is not difficult – it simply involves encouraging it to emphasize certain aspects while downplaying others. For example, the prompt “describe the economic impact of green energy” will yield a broad overview, whereas specifying “explain how green energy promotes job growth in Ireland” will narrow the focus to one country and job creation.

There are many examples of manipulation. In customer service, a query like “How can I help you today?” can be refined to “Tell me about the problem you’re experiencing, and I’ll help resolve it quickly.” Such small changes in communication can elicit more detailed responses from users, allowing the AI to provide better assistance.

10 Ways to Manipulate AI

  1. Framing: The prompt should clearly define the context and expected response.

    • Example: “Tell me about artificial intelligence.”
    • Framing example: “Explain the impact of artificial intelligence on modern healthcare, focusing on diagnostic tools and patient care.”
  2. Providing Context: Presenting essential information or the desired perspective can yield a much better result.

    • Example: “Describe the Eiffel Tower.”
    • Context example: “Act as a tour guide and describe the history, architectural significance, and tourist appeal of the Eiffel Tower.”
  3. Role Assignment: This method often uses the AI model’s ability to simulate various perspectives or personalities.

    • Example: “What are the benefits of meditation?”
    • Role example: “Act as a psychologist and explain the mental health benefits of meditation.”
  4. Specificity and Constraints: Specific details and constraints can help narrow down responses and make them more targeted.

    • Example: “Write a story.”
    • More specific example: “Write a 500-word detective story set in a futuristic city.”
  5. Prompt Sequences: Using a sequence of questions or prompts can guide the AI model through complex tasks and even define the process to be followed.

    • Example: “How does photosynthesis work?”
    • Sequence example: “What is photosynthesis? What are the main stages of photosynthesis? What benefits does this process provide to plants?”
  6. Examples and Templates: Providing examples and templates helps the AI model understand the desired format and style.

    • Example: “Write a cover letter.”
    • Template example: “Write a cover letter for an IT programmer position. Include the following example [Insert].”
  7. Leveraging Model Knowledge: Knowing the extent of the AI model’s knowledge base and referencing specific data, research, or well-known concepts can greatly improve response quality.

    • Example: “Tell me about climate change.”
    • Knowledge example: “Discuss the impact of climate change on the Antarctic ice sheets, referencing the latest NASA studies.”
  8. Tone and Style Specification: Specifying the desired tone or style of the text can help tailor the response to a particular situation or audience.

    • Example: “Summarize George Orwell’s novel ‘1984’.”
    • Tone example: “Summarize George Orwell’s novel ‘1984’ in a humorous style, with a friendly tone.”
  9. Encouraging Creative Thinking: Prompts that encourage the AI to think creatively or hypothetically can lead to original and unexpected responses.

    • Example: “What are the potential uses of AI in the education system?”
    • Creative example: “Imagine a future classroom that has been using AI technologies for many years. Describe the learning environment and tools.”
  10. Conditional Prompts: Using prompts that specify particular conditions helps the AI understand how the task should be performed and leads to more effective results.

  • Example: “Describe a successful business.”
  • Conditional example: “Describe a successful business that operates in the technology sector and prioritizes sustainability.”

Where is Prompt Manipulation Used?

Business and Marketing

Businesses, especially marketing specialists, effectively apply prompt manipulation to enhance communication with clients and provide exceptional user experience. By refining prompts, specialists improve chatbot responses, adapt marketing messages, and more precisely analyze customer sentiments. For example, an e-commerce platform can use prompt manipulation to create personalized product recommendations based on customers’ browsing history, expectations, and preferences.

Education

Teachers, training managers, and coaches who aim to create an interactive learning experience also often use prompt manipulation. By subtly altering their prompts, they can create original and personalized content that meets educational goals and student needs. For instance, an AI teacher can use prompt hints to simulate real scenarios that help students develop problem-solving skills in a controlled environment.

Creative Industries

In the fields of art, music, and literature, prompt manipulation enables creators to explore new AI possibilities. Everyone enjoys memes with politicians, and writers, by providing descriptive hints, can use AI to generate story ideas or create characters. Musicians can experiment with AI-generated compositions by entering prompts that define the mood or style of the music. Thus, the possibilities continue to expand!

Will We Learn to Live Safer?

While the potential benefits of prompt manipulation are evident, it must be acknowledged that there are significant ethical and security concerns. The ability to influence AI outcomes can be exploited by malicious actors. Disinformation, fake news, propaganda – it is no surprise that the number of crimes in the internet space is growing exponentially.

To address these ethical issues, it is necessary to develop AI regulation systems. Unfortunately, although the EU Parliament has already approved the AI Act, national governments, preoccupied with election moods, do not pay much attention to it. We can only rejoice that we, as creators, can use the unrestricted AI tool space and continually improve.
